Sanja (pronounced Suh- nya) was born in Macedonia and moved to New Zealand in 1997 with her immediate family. Dr Cook graduated from The University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 2010. She completed her junior doctor years in Auckland, New Zealand, with experience in a variety of specialties, including surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and psychiatry.
Between 2013 and 2015, Dr Cook worked as an Emergency Medicine Doctor across a variety of rural hospitals in Australia, including in New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. In 2016 she moved to London with her husband and worked as an emergency medicine registrar for 5 years at The Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead.
While there, she often managed and looked after a busy A+E department overnight. At the beginning of 2021 she moved back to NZ from London to become a GP. During her GP training, Dr Cook completed a Professional Diploma in Dermatology and an Advanced Certificate in Dermoscopy and Skin Cancer. She also has a keen interest in mental health and psychological health and wellbeing, as well as gender diversity and transgender health. Dr Cook loves to travel, meeting her husband while backpacking in South America some years ago. In her spare time she loves beach walks with her rescue dog Forest, painting and learning to play the piano. Dr Cook also speaks Macedonian, Serbo-Croatian, intermediate French and is learning Russian and Japanese.
